Spirit of the Coast launch

I had the privilege of attending a blessing ceremony for the paddlers and canoe about to head off on the “Spirit of the Coast” paddle from Vancouver to southern Alaska on Sunday at the Kwantlen First Nation Longhouse near Fort Langley.

Chris Cooper, who has travelled the BC coast 6 times by canoe and spent the last few summers paddling from London to the northernmost islands of Scotland had the idea of doing another canoe journey along the BC coastline. Chris says:

“‘Spirit of the Coast’ is about awareness, education, culture, environment and most of all bringing attention to our beautiful BC Coastline and to share with Canadians what an amazing place we have. It is not a protest, but about educating all that have never seen it.”

The six-person voyageur-style fiberglass canoe, complete with custom-made spray skirt, will be accompanied by photographer Don Jonasson in his 22’ sailboat. Don will be filming the entire journey and hopes to have the completed work aired on the Discovery and Knowledge Networks.
